Greg Oden leaving Butler basketball staff; Connor McCaffery expected to replace him

Connor McCaffery, son of Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, is expected to join the Butler basketball staff as an assistant coach, according to sources.

McCaffery, 29, has been an assistant coach at Northern Iowa the past two seasons. He previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Cornell.

McCaffery is the son of Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, who was the head coach at Butler from 2001-05.

Greg Oden, a former No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft, is leaving the Butler basketball staff to pursue other opportunities, according to sources.

Oden, 34, has been an assistant coach at Butler since 2019. He previously spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State.

Oden was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He played in just 82 games in the NBA due to injuries.

McCaffery is expected to join the Butler staff as an assistant coach under head coach Thad Matta.

Matta is entering his third season as the head coach at Butler. He previously spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Ohio State.

McCaffery is expected to replace Oden on the Butler staff. Oden is leaving the staff to pursue other opportunities.

McCaffery is a rising star in the coaching ranks.

He helped Northern Iowa to a 20-10 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament this past season.

McCaffery is also a skilled recruiter. He helped Northern Iowa land a top-100 recruit in the 2023 class.
